UAF celebrates Oktoberfest with two events

An Oktoberfest celebration at the Ƶ will feature a panel discussion and a day of festive activities. The events will bring the vibrant spirit of Bavarian culture to the campus and the Ƶ community.
The panel discussion, in the Usibelli Building’s BP Design Theatre from 7-9 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 19, will feature a diverse group of experts:
- Helga Wagenleiter, UAF German instructor and the festival’s director, providing insights into the history of Oktoberfest.
- Elliott Anderson, UAF German Club president, discussing German culture.
- Sarah McConnell, UAF Music Department, exploring German music traditions.
- Zoe Jones, UAF Art Department, presenting on German architecture.
- Bobby Wilken, HooDoo brewmaster, on the art of beer brewing.
Guests can enjoy authentic Bavarian food, live accordion music performed by Angelika Krinner-Crouteau and the ceremonial “tapping of the keg” led by College of Liberal Arts Dean Ellen Lopez.

The festivities will continue from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 20, with a lively set of activities around campus, including:
- Masskrugstemmen (stein-holding contest): Test your strength in this traditional Bavarian competition.
- Yodeling lessons: Experience this unique and joyous form of singing.
- Photo booth: Try on traditional Bavarian clothing and pose for a photo.
- Live music.
Both events are free and open to the public.
