Instructor Guidelines

UAF instructors decide if proctored exams are necessary for their courses, and Testing Services provides the following guidelines to help maintain the academic integrity of these exams. Before agreeing to serve as a proctor, please read these guidelines carefully.

Exams should be administered in a recognized professional testing environment, such as a university or college testing center, library, military education center, or similar institutional setting.

If a student wishes to use a location or proctor outside of these recognized professional settings, the student must work directly with their instructor to arrange alternate proctoring.  The instructor will then distribute the exam materials directly to the agreed-upon proctor.

Note* Regardless of location, the proctor should be an impartial third party with no personal, academic, or employment relationship with the student. Proctors may not be family members, friends, roommates, teammates, coaches, co-workers, supervisors, or anyone with a vested interest in the student’s academic performance.

RegisterBlast Professor Portal

As faculty, you are able to access the RegisterBlast Professor Portal in each of your course shells located in Canvas. Using RegisterBlast, you can submit your exams and can review the completed exams from your students. Click the portal button below for helpful instructions.

Your testing windows should be in RegisterBlast no later than the second week of instruction.

  • Exam materials can be added at a later date.
  • Be sure that your exam materials are added no later than 3 days prior to your testing window.

Exam Coversheets

Coversheets will be required for all exams and must be included as the first page of the exam file. Exams submitted without a coversheet will not be processed or distributed until the required cover sheets provided. Coversheets provide essential information for our proctors and include space to record the student’s name and exam start and stop times.

If you want to create your own, there are further guidelines in our

Make-up Exams

Instructors must send approval in advance, including the date range during which the student may take the exam. Approval must be emailed to uaf-testing@alaska.edu, and instructors need to ensure the make-up exam is already in RegisterBlast or attached to the email. If we do not have written approval by email prior to the student appointment, exams will not be processed, distributed or administered.

In-Person Course Exam Support

Exam support for in-person courses is limited and available by request only. Instructors must submit requests in advance by emailing uaf-testing@alaska.edu. Requests must include the number of students requiring support and the approved date range during which the examination may be administered. Please note that requests are subject to availability and space limitations. During peak testing periods, we may be unable to accommodate all in-person exam requests.

End of Exam Period

At the conclusion of an exam period, instructors who are missing proctored exams may provide Testing Services with a list of students or exams not yet received. Testing Services can verify whether the student scheduled an exam appointment and whether completed exam materials have been received from the proctor.

Virtual Proctoring

We encourage the use of Honorlock for virtual proctoring in computer-based Canvas exams. Honorlock integrates seamlessly with Canvas, providing a streamlined experience for students. It offers a more efficient and secure solution compared to in-person proctoring, where consistently viewing each student’s screen is not possible. Many students prefer taking exams remotely, and Honorlock has proven more effective in maintaining academic integrity than our previous vendor.

Here are a few things to keep in mind:

  • Honorlock is only for online exams.
  • Honorlock charges $9 per exam. If students click the “pay for course” button when registering, their total fees for that course will be capped at $18 for the semester.
  • It’s convenient, easy to use, and requires a stable internet connection.
  • Instructors are responsible for setting up Honorlock in their online courses. eCampus does not set it up, make changes, or have access to your Honorlock setup.
